Best Orthopedic Dog Beds

Which Bed is Right for Your Pup?

It’s 6:37am and your cold-nosed alarm clock hasn’t woken you up for his morning outing. You look over to his corner and see him stiffly getting out of his bed and your heart breaks.

You wonder if maybe it’s just age – he may not be a spring chicken but once he’s up and moving around there is plenty of spring in his step. Maybe it’s the erratic weather.

You’re up by the time he reaches you and with a final sigh you wonder how to make his life better – because he’s made your life complete.

There used to be a time when we could sleep on any surface and at any time; at our desk, on the floor of your buddy’s apartment, the back seat of a compact car during a road trip.

Just as our needs change, our canine companions need for a better sleep surface than the deck out by the pool or a blanket in the kitchen becomes evident.

Age, injury, and breed-specific needs such as hip dysplasia are viable concerns for every dog parent. Picking the right dog food can be a major factor but, like with humans, a good dog bed – like an orthopedic one – can be the answer.best memory foam dog bed

But finding the best orthopedic dog bed can be daunting with all of the options, models, and features out there.

Orthopedic dog beds certainly aren’t a cure-all, but when it comes to arthritis or aching joints they can be a game-changer in the quality of life – and sleep – for our dogs. And who wouldn’t want that?

In this review we are looking to help muddle through the confusion of what to look for – and what to avoid – when purchasing a new dog bed.

Not all beds are created equal and since your pooch can’t necessarily tell you what feels good and what doesn’t, it’s up to us to sift through the hype and pick out the best option for our dog and our budget.

Best Orthopedic Dog Beds Under $50

In this section we will be looking at the lower-priced options for a new bed. While inexpensive doesn’t automatically mean cheap, it’s usually a safe bet that they will be lacking some of the quality, workmanship and features of the more expensive ones.

We’ve bypassed all the inferior products, and while this is not an exhaustive list of the orthopedic beds available in this price range, it will give you – and your budget – a good starting point.

Mainly, what will set this category apart from the more expensive offerings will be material and content quality. You can expect standard foam rather than memory foam.

The quality will be emphasized on the least expensive component – namely the cover.

This category will be a good entry into the orthopedic-type dog beds without a large investment, especially if you are planning to “sample” a few different styles until you find when your pet is comfortable with.

You want to get the most bang for your buck, but keep in mind that you get what you pay for … And if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

Overview

This is a “traditional” bed design you would see in most pet homes; low, flat sides and no frills. We have included this style because, for dog beds, this foam design is still considered orthopedic.

The cover comes in an impressive variety of options and can be unzipped and removed for easy washing – or you can make your own to better match your style.

The plush top is complemented with the polycanvas base to protect your floors from accidental leaks. This product is shipped from the manufacturer under compression. There is an implied warranty, but not specified.

The “egg crate” design is dated, and may not withstand the test of time – although this would be a good step in upgrading your dog’s bedding for an improvement without shelling out a couple hundred bucks.

It should be noted that this manufacturer uses foam that is certified and tested made without PBDEs, TDCPP’s or TCEP. The foam is also free of heavy metals and formaldehyde and low VOCs

Summary

This is a fair product for a fair price, allowing you to move towards an enhanced sleep surface while staying within budget and environmentally conscientious.

Tech Specs

  • 7 sizes available which are designed to fit most standard crates
  • Lightweight makes travel easy (works great in a soft sided crate)
  • Interior is shredded memory foam
  • All sizes are standard 3″ height
  • Soft microsuede cover is washable in cold or hot water
See Full Specs

Overview

I was a bit surprised at the use of shredded memory foam, but since it is contained within stitched inner baffles, there should be less concern with the foam shifting and bunching.

While memory foam provides a superior sleep surface, it is important to remember that the foam is affected by the temperature; a bed left out in the cold will be stiffer than one inside. The body’s warmth serves to warm – and soften – the foam.

It is still under debate how much the use of shredded foam reduces the quality as opposed to using a solid block of memory foam. Like all memory foam, this ships compressed and will need 24-48 hours to properly expand before use.

The cover appears of good quality and stitching, easy to remove and launder. Because of the increased durability it can be washed in hot water, but the bottom is not specified as waterproof.

The colors and styles available are rather limited (teal/white, red/white, 2-tone grey, 2-tone khaki) or replaced with a homemade cover.

Although the overall sizes are limited – the largest being 52″ x 34″ – sizing to fit most standard crates is a plus if you’re looking for a crate pad.

There is a limited 3-year  warranty for repair, replacement or refund warranty for defects in workmanship, but the warranty is to the original purchaser only (save your receipt!), and does not cover changes in softness, resilience, impressions less than 1.5″, stains or misuse.

Summary

This product could move you towards the memory foam category on a tighter budget, but the shredded makeup and carefully worded warranty would need to be weighed before choosing this option.

Overview

This is a more “traditional” orthopedic bed, consisting of a 2-ply design and incorporating a single slab of memory foam. The top layer is specified as certified, we cannot speak as to the contents of the lower layer of standard foam, which gives stability and a firm foundation for the top layer to support and conform, as we would expect from memory foam.

The size of the largest unit is a bit underwhelming, as it would not be appropriate an appropriate choice for a larger dog. Again, the memory foam will need at least 24 hours to expand.

With this model, the quality is in the cover. The soft velour cover is completely machine washable and dryable. The color-matching zipper is along two sides for easy removal and replacement after washing.

The complete cover is water resistant, and the non-skid bottom was a pleasant surprise – I’m sure appreciated by your dog if the bed is on a smooth surface. The cover can be ordered separate from the company if needed, but is available only in the off-white color.

We could find no specified or implied warranty information.

Summary

This is a solid performer for the price; true memory foam with a solid density base paired with a good quality cover, unfortunately the sizes would be appropriate for a small to medium dog only.

Overview

The name on the tag “Serta” caught our eye, and we had high hopes for an all-around great performer for this bed, and we were surprised to find in this price category. The bed features orthopedic egg crate foam, and a removable, washable cover..

Unfortunately, the promise stopped at the name tag. The bed is 4″ thick which should provide comfort between your pet and the floor. The bed is made with standard egg crate foam, and has reports of durability issues.

The cover boasts no waterproofing or any other enhancements to their design. There is no implied or specified warranty

Summary

Aside from the name “Serta” we are hard pressed to recommend a product that has limited sizes and quality that would be described as inconsistent at best.

Overview

This bed is a 2-layer foam design; 2″ high density support foam base with 2″ layer of memory foam. Like all memory foam, this ships compressed and will need 24-48 hours to properly expand before use.

The cover appears of good quality and stitching, easy to remove and launder. Because of the increased durability it can be machine washed and dried.

We’re unsure how the use of a non-removable waterproof inner cover will affect the inner foam in the long term, however it does help protect the mattress.

Summary

This product could move you towards the memory foam category on a tighter budget, although it is not the best option for larger pets.

Best Orthopedic Dog Beds Under $100

As expected, with increased price comes increased quality.

Moving into the mid-range pricing should ideally reveal an increase of the overall quality, specifically in the thickness and materials that are used to make up the bed as well as the warranty and durability over time.

The standard features of the covers should remain relatively about the same. But as with anything else, it’s human nature for us to automatically choose a moderately priced item when looking at a purchase that isn’t a personal choice – not too low so as not to appear cheap, yet not too expensive to appear extravagant.

The important factor to remember when purchasing an orthopedic dog bed is – like with the comfort and bone health of a human – your pet’s bone health and overall comfort can also degenerate if their bedding is made of lesser quality and durability than an optimum product.

This leads to additional veterinary care visits which can quickly rack up expenses. Middle of the road products can be good quality buy with a savvy eye within reason.

Affordability is more achievable as long as you recognize that it might need to be replaced a little sooner than a top quality priced model.

Like with any other industry, dog bed manufacturers understand this and we found some out-of-place low-quality choices that belong in the low priced category – or off the market altogether.

Overview

An upgrade to the Serta Orthopedic Couch, this pet bed is brought into this price category by the memory that is enhanced by the MicroSupport gel beads that are quilted into the top surface. The overall interior is an unspecified “lofty fiber”, stitched into baffles.

The cover is washable but boasts no waterproofing or any other enhancements to their design. There is no implied or specified warranty.

Summary

While this Serta was in the next price range, we still find it wanting compared to similarly priced products.

Overview

This is a solid performer at this price range. As predicted, we have moved from the thinner beds to the more robust and supportive class.

As you would expect, the foam is a single slab and almost twice as thick as the lesser expensive ones. As the bed size increases (and, theoretically, the dog’s size and weight) the thickness of the bed increases to compensate and provide the needed support and comfort.

The bolsters are generously filled for snuggling comfort and chin rests. The bed ships partly disassembled; the bolsters are filled and you slip the base in.

The cover is both water resistant and tear resistant as well as machine washable, and has the non-skid bottom.

All sizes are standard gray, while the Large is optionally available in brown.

There is a simple 12-month warranty protecting against any manufacturing defects.

Summary

This a good option for your small to medium dog that couples quality and comfort without any serious compromises with the other. If you are looking for a moderately priced durable quality orthopedic dog bed with a solid 12 warranty, this is a good option.

Overview

Like others in this price class, this is a solid memory foam bed. We would have liked to seen it thicker for the price but it is specified as “orthopedic memory foam”.

Like other memory foam, it needs a day or two to expand out. The warranty is implied, but the generous extra-large size should be adequate for the largest breeds.

The cover is available in limited colors, but of course since it’s removable you can easily change it out. The cover is suede on the chocolate, khaki and charcoal colors, and the denim color is, actually denim.

This bed features a dual-cover system; the removable inner cover that protects the foam core is waterproof, while the outer cover has a non-slip bottom. Warranty is implied but not specified.

Summary

This is a classic style and, while more thickness would have been preferred, we like the dual covers that keep the solid core protected combined with the waterproofing.

A specific warranty would make this bed more appealing however, given the quality we would anticipated it to stand up to time longer than a lesser quality bed.

We’d say the Go Pet Club Memory Foam bed is our pick as the best “cheap” orthopedic dog bed. It’s comfortable, waterproof, and won’t break the bank.

Overview

This 2-ply foam support system has a 4″ high stability support foam base (2″ on the medium size) with a 2″ layer of medical grade orthopedic memory foam.

The classic design makes an easy on and off for an older or arthritic dog but may not be the best choice for the largest breeds who like to stretch out and compress it down over a short time frame.

The cover is waterproof and machine washable, and replacement covers are available. Unfortunately, the color palette is limited to all-over gray, with the options of yellow, black, blue, or orange for the piping. The cover is not as soft as other covers, but is durable and resistant to mold and mildew as well as dust mites.

Warranty is implied but not specified.

Summary

This is a good quality bed, and the tougher cover makes this a good choice to go indoors as well as outdoors. Its best attributes are the waterproofing to make messes an easy clean-up, mold and mildew resistant for the damp areas, along with dust mites resistance as they are known to bite and irritate.

Those factors make this is our choice as the best orthopedic dog bed to use outdoors.

Overview

Like with the Serta, at first glance we had high expectations for this bed. A quick visual inspection gave the impression of a soft but supportive sleeping area.

Sadly that is not the case with this bed. The bed is filled with PP Cotton – basically polypropylene stuffing used in toys and most PP compounds are highly flammable. The corn-stuffed pillow is potentially a hazard to chewers, and the corn scattered across the floor could be dangerous for small children – or bare feet!

The cover is removable and machine washable, but not as easy as some of the others.

While we loved the overall look of this bed, this was the only color pattern offered and having a custom cover made could be problematic and pricey.

The sleeping surface can be removed and used as an un-bolstered pad, but the overall design would not be supportive. Warranty is implied but not specified but they offer a “lifetime guarantee”.

Summary

While the initial appearance of this bed seems deceivingly well made and comfy, ultimately a lack of quality materials make this a poor choice for an orthopedic bed.

Best Orthopedic Dog Beds Under $200

In this section, we have featured the more expensive offerings. At this price level you should expect the highest quality materials, durability and workmanship.

Stitching should be impeccably snug without missing a stitch. Materials should be design, color and fade consistent. Zippers are expected to ideally slide easily without hang-up’s or breaks.

This is wear the rubber meets the road from a quality point of view. There is nothing more frustrating than removing or replacing the cover of your top dollar dog bed either to or from the laundry only to have a stitches separate, material fade and zippers break or snag on loose materials.

Even worse yet, for the material to shrink up to three times smaller than it’s original size rendering the cover absolutely useless. Equally speaking, durability is anticipated and expected without question.

Remember that a bed made exclusively – or even only in part – with memory foam will clearly state it. If it’s calling the material “orthopedic” foam, it’s most likely the standard egg crate, but could be medium or high density foam.

The workmanship should be irrefutably excellent and the warranty clearly spelled out leaving no gray area.

Orthopedic dog beds in this price category are the Cadillac’s of the dog bed world. You wouldn’t purchase Cadillac with a vague or inadequate warranty and workmanship and your dog’s orthopedic bed is no different.

Overview

The size of this bed has moved it into the next price class – with its smaller model in the lower – and is worth the second look due to the generous size and thickness.

As with their other Premium Lounge, the bed’s solid core is its best attribute. The bolsters are generously filled for snuggling comfort and chin rests.

As with their other sizes, the bed ships partly disassembled; the bolsters are filled and you slip the base in.

The cover is both water resistant and tear resistant as well as machine washable, and has the non-skid bottom.

This size is available in brown and is backed by the same 12-month warranty protecting against any manufacturing defects.

Summary

Another good product in a budget-friendly price range. The extra large size is still much smaller than similarly priced options but due to the quality, durability, non-skid bottom, and height, we’d say this is the best bed for senior dogs or dogs with arthritis as it makes getting in and out a bit easier.

Overview

This design takes the best of both styles; the easy access of the traditional flat bed with the 3-side bolsters for the extra comfort for snugglers or chin rest.

The 100% solid memory foam core is 7″ high on the extra large size, allowing support and comfort for the largest and heaviest breeds.

The sleeping surface is easily removed for travel or if your dog prefers a classic bed, and is held in place by front angles that are virtually undetectable when the two pieces are together.

This bed has a sleek design coupled with comfort and support as well as versatility.

This bed features the dual cover system we have grown to appreciate. The outer cover is a softer but durable suede while the inner cover is waterproof to protect the foam core.

We would have preferred to see more color and pattern options than brown, charcoal, and grey, but it would be easy to craft a new cover for the sleeping surface. Warranty is implied but not specified.

Summary

The generous sleep surface and thick solid memory foam core, with the dual covers, make this a good choice for larger and heavier breeds that will withstand the test of time in the long run.

Let’s face it, who doesn’t like a deep cushy bed? However, the lack of any specified warranty is a let down.

Considering the size, durability, and memory foam core, we think this is the best orthopedic dog bed for large dogs like Great Danes and Mastiffs.

Overview

While it boasts a generous width, we were disappointed to find that the “orthopedic foam” used in the sleeping surface of this bed was your run-of-the-mill egg crate foam.

The high bolsters are filled with hypo-loft fiber filling, but the overall height of the bed itself – 8″ for the extra large – and the lacking premium memory foam will most certainly reduce the comfort level for larger and heavier dogs. The overall narrowness across the sizes will limit dogs that like to sleep on their side stretched out.

The cover is removable and washable but is specified as air dry. The cover is micro-suede on all sides with the exception of the sleep surface, which is polar fleece.

There are various styles and colors available, and the zipper is military grade. The cover does not have any waterproof or water resistant qualities.

Warranty is implied but not specified. This product is made in the USA.

Summary

For the overall size and price class, we expected higher quality materials and craftsmanship.

Again, the increase in size has moved this size into the next price class. As with all their sizes, it is specified as “orthopedic memory foam”. Remember – after opening this memory foam needs a day or two to expand out.

This 55″wide size should be adequate for larger breeds, but the relative low height may cause the heavier dogs to sink in too far – aggravating rather than comforting..

The cover is available in limited colors – suede is used on the chocolate, khaki and charcoal colors, and the denim color is actually denim – but like the other pet beds, the removable cover can easily be replaced.

This choice is a dual-cover system; the removable inner cover that protects the foam core is waterproof, while the outer cover has a non-slip bottom. Warranty is implied but not specified.

For the size and price class, a thicker bed than offered should be expected.

Overview

This has to be the biggest surprise, hands down. What looked at first glance as a standard dog bed turns out to be a highly engineered design unlike any other.

Beginning with Tactilus sensor mapping, the Big Barker orthopedic bed was designed and intended for use with breeds weighing over 50lbs.

For smaller dogs, a smaller size is available. The 7″ height is made up of 3″ of H45 support foam, with 2″ of H10 comfort foam on either side – making either side “right side up”. The 7″ height makes it easy on and off.

The cover is available in 3 colors – khaki, chocolate and burgundy – with surge stitching and a 3-sided hidden zipper to make removal a snap. It is a highly durable, furniture-grade microfiber.

While it is not waterproof, an optional waterproof cover, made from the same materials as used for hospital beds – can be ordered.

This product is made in America using CertiPur-US foam, with a generous return policy and a 10-year “Can’t Flatten, Won’t Flatten” warranty

Summary

The Big Barker is our choice for the best orthopedic dog bed on the market. What impressed us most about this choice would be that the manufacturers engineered it specifically for the large breed dogs’ comfort and health in mind. I just ordered one 🙂

Conclusion

As we’ve seen, sometimes something as simple as a size can move a bed from one price class to the next. The truth is, our canine friends need a good night sleep – on a decent surface – just like we do.

Before choosing an orthopedic bed online, do a little recon work to make it easier, like:

  1.      What position sleeper is my dog? Does he like to curl up or stretch out?
  2.      What surfaces does my dog sleep longer on?
  3.      What is the size of my dog?
  4.      What is the age and overall health of my dog?
  5.      Does my dog have any special needs like arthritis or hip dysplasia?
  6.      What about my budget?

For a curler or snuggler, consider one of the couch-type beds from PetFusion, whereas a stretcher would be more comfortable with a flat bed.

Remember to gauge the area your pup uses to pick an appropriate size. Some studies have shown that a breed prone to arthritis or other issues – a German Shepherd would be prone to hip dysplasia, for example  – would benefit in their adult and senior years if started with the right sleeping surface sooner than later.memory foam dog beds

Keep in mind that pricier doesn’t necessarily mean better – you may find one of the lower priced beds a better fit for your pooch than the mid-priced or high-priced ones.

While we found the break-out winner of our Best Orthopedic Dog Bed Competition in the most expensive option, some of the lower-priced beds were of definite quality.

Try not to let the price tag distract you too much and above all don’t think that by having less of a budget to work with makes you any less of a loving dog parent; the fact that you’re here looking into options proves you’re a great puppy parent.
